Yogurt parfaits are readily available in coffee shops and breakfast joints, but not all are equal in terms of healthiness. Regrettably, pre-made versions are often prepared with flavored yogurts, some of which can contain up to 25 grams of sugar, effectively turning them into a dessert rather than an ideal breakfast.

The good news is that crafting a healthy homemade yogurt parfait is a straightforward endeavor if you choose the right ingredients. By selecting plain, full-fat yogurt instead of flavored options, you can avoid unwanted additives and added sugars, while ensuring that you still receive the essential fat-soluble nutrients naturally found in yogurt. The yogurt section at your local grocery store can be bewildering, so having knowledge about how to make a wise yogurt selection is invaluable.

Although most yogurt parfait recipes traditionally feature granola, I’ve chosen to substitute chia seeds. This addition provides plant-based protein, healthy fats, and an appealing texture. Combined with fresh berries, a touch of vanilla, and a drizzle of honey, this naturally sweetened Berry and Chia Yogurt Parfait is a protein-rich breakfast that’s bound to be a hit with the whole family.

Berry and Chia Yogurt Parfait

Prepared in just 5 minutes and boasting a generous 10 grams of protein, the Berry and Chia Yogurt Parfait is an excellent meal prep option for a quick and nutritious breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup plain full-fat yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup berries, fresh or frozen

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine yogurt, chia seeds, honey, and vanilla extract. Stir until thoroughly mixed.
  • In a mason jar or container, place fresh or frozen berries at the bottom and use a fork to break them up. If using frozen berries, you may need to thaw them or microwave them for 10 seconds to soften slightly.
  • Top the crushed berries with the yogurt mixture and transfer to the fridge, allowing it to sit overnight or for at least 10 minutes. This will allow the chia seeds to soften and create a better texture.
  • In the morning, remove it from the fridge and add your choice of additional toppings!

Notes

If you want to increase the protein content, opt for plain Greek yogurt instead of regular yogurt, which provides a substantial 21 grams of protein per serving.
